Oh look, another animated page. And this time, something is actually moving!
Let's be honest, this is me just goofing around with new techniques and isn't all that crucial to the story. Next week will be more relevant, I promise.

It's a beautiful shot though. I'll take your goofing around over many people's most sincere effort any day of the week. :)

You are attuned to a visual language, and you shouldn't trivialise that. This page tells a story in a simple, beautiful way.

Yeah, what the scuba diver said. It's a beautiful page, and it captures a moment. It's a lovely change of pace after all the fighting and excitement.
They're taking off into the unknown, and the leaf falling shows that there's no going back.
You should be proud of this page.

Well hey, what's the point of a webcomic if you're not going to goof around with new techniques?!

Goofing around or not, I think it absolutely works as a transitional page. Especially such an "arc" as this, where you could've just as easily had everyone leave and that be the end of it. Thinking outside the box!

I really like the new look. Also, today's play may be tomorrow's progress.

@Delta-v: Thanks! The site background image was HUGE and took took long to load from page to page (plus it was BORING), so I decided to make some alterations. I might customize things more in the future, when I get the time.

@Hjels: Sincere effort still counts for a lot in my book, but I'm glad you enjoyed this somewhat experimental page.

@GroovyKinda: I'd be more proud if SmackJeeves' file size limits hadn't forced me to gut this GIF. The original gave the leaf some initial hangtime, giving readers time to scroll down before the animation started, and the glow dissipated more slowly, but I had to delete those extra frames so I could upload this. It was that or severely reduce the size and/or image quality, so this was the lesser of two evils. Still maddening though, after all that work. The original concept was even more ambitious, with at least fifty frames of animation and a more elaborate descent of the leaf planned until I discovered no animated GIF can support a file with that many frames at this canvas size. Plus, the more frames, the more pixelated everything becomes due to GIFs having a limited number of colors and shades, so fifty frames would probably have been insanely ugly and grainy.

Long story short, GIFs suck and I really need to get Flash one of these days.

@Charil: That's what I love about webcomics! No other medium has so much freedom to experiment and play. I'd be remiss not to try something unusual now and then.

Good use of ambient animation. Really sets the mood.

@melaredblu: It still looks great. It might even be better this way. It's simple and direct.
Still, I'd love to see the original someday.

@NitztheBloody: Thanks! I was going for sort of a hopeless feeling.

Reply melaredblu, February 2nd, 2014, 12:13 am

@Guest: Alas, when I deleted the extra frames, I did not think to make a copy of the original first. I'm afraid it's gone, now.

@Guest: Sadly, I did not think to make a copy of the original to save before deleting the extra frames. It's gone now, I'm, afraid.

@melaredblu: Sorry, I was the guest.
Too bad you deleted it. Oh well, live and learn.
I just love this page. And I can't wait until Wednesday to see what the gang is up to.
