It's kind of impressive that he managed to continue this monologue for that many years.

Magical Girl uniforms are rarely weather-conscious, but Chroma basically has a bottomless wardrobe. She just happens to like a very specific style of dress.

@melaredblu: You'll never know how many stern talkings-to I had to give myself over Chroma's wardrobe.

Artistically, I really like the way the snowfall is muting and shifting the colors into the blue end of the spectrum. It looks to me like quite a challenge, but you pulled it off. Story-wise, the slight melancholy note plays off well against the festive snowman scene, reminding us that Brunswick is mortal. I thought that was well plotted.

@melaredblu: Well, if you found a look that works for you...
And aren't Magical Girls like superheroes? Don't they all have their uniform kind of look?
Speaking of looks, my goodness, that snow really looks freezing. And those icicle arms are what caught my eye. That poor frozen...elf? With the droopy ears.
And is that Brunswick's gravestone in the last panel? That's such a sad, yet effective way to show the passing of time.
You really do bittersweet well.

I just assume magical girls are immune to the elements

It's that extra mile of, say, a special cold-weather Magical Girl Dress that makes a great comic stand out from a good comic

Reply melaredblu, December 17th, 2014, 11:23 pm

@Delta-v: Now I'm curious. Why did you need to give yourself a talking-to about her dress?

The original draft had Chroma standing at his grave, but I thought that would be way too sad, so...

Reply melaredblu, December 17th, 2014, 11:25 pm

@GroovyKinda: Chroma has to keep her look marketable. Thank goodness she didn't go through a goth phase in her teen years.

Funny aside about this page--I actually made this during the summer. Maybe that's why the snow is so cold-looking. Must've been a hot day.

Reply melaredblu, December 17th, 2014, 11:26 pm

@schlissel: Maybe she's just trying not to show off. People might get jealous.

Reply melaredblu, December 17th, 2014, 11:27 pm

@NitztheBloody: I kind of got this idea from Angel Moxie, when a character quips about not having a winter uniform. This should be a thing more often.

Reply Delta-v, December 18th, 2014, 11:28 am

@melaredblu: It has to do with the secondary meaning of he word for "unlimited" and the brevity (even in winter) of her outfit. I really am trying to behave myself, but it's so hard.

Good instincts on the grave scene. What you did was sobering without being painful. And I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't realize that the snowman was a monochrome until after the "Edit" function had timed out.

By the way, you might be interested in Friday's "Why I Read". I found a "Magical Girl" story that's...different.

@Delta-v: I get it. Well, there's a reason she wears those striped stockings. I've never drawn her or June at the, ah, correct angle to show this, but they go all the way up, like tights. Fighting in a miniskirt would be problematic otherwise. Chroma's dresses are less revealing than most magical girl outfits I've seen.

I'm always on the lookout for inspiration, so I'll definitely check out the comic. Thanks for the heads-up!

Wow, look at all that snow! Great detail with the icicles especially!

Reply melaredblu, December 19th, 2014, 12:19 am

@JDPftw: Thanks! The icicles were fun to make, just a lot of messing with layers and opacity.
